Italy stiffens measures against violent protesters, 500 soldiers sent to Milan

The Italian government has tightened measures against violent protests, while Milan City is expected to be at the centre of implementing new regulations following last weekend’s riots.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Melon has taken steps to increase punishments for those involved in acts of violence, as protesters, among them many teenagers, damaged shops, cars and robbed businesses, BBC writes, broadcast Duguagjini.

Under new measures, 500 soldiers will be engaged in Milan to support the police.

The protest is fair, the destruction of our cities is not Mellon.

The new legislation envisions a special criminal act for violent participation in protests. Throwing the pirotechnics or stones can be sentenced to up to five years in prison.

Young people between the ages of 14 and 18 may also bear criminal responsibility, while police may ban them in advance if they suspect they pose a threat.

Measures include the principle of dealt with, paying for, under which people who damage public or private property, such as bus stations and shops, may be forced to pay the damages. In cases where the perpetrators are under 18 years of age, the bill can be sent to their parents.

Presenting the measures earlier this week, Melon said her government understands the difficulties many young people face in finding jobs and securing good salaries.

However, she stressed that economic hardship cannot justify violence.

The difficulties cannot be an excuse for violence, the Italian prime minister said.
