Haxhiu has expressed shock at the case, stressing that the circumstances in the assassination require a thorough investigation, which should include the way institutions have addressed the victim’s sentences and what measures are taken for its defence.

He was deeply shocked by the murder of Arlinda Zekiaj last night in Vitomirica, Peja. Arlinda was killed just minutes after returning home from the police station, where he had denounced domestic violence, Haxhiu wrote.

She has made it known that three days before the assassination, Zekiaj was addressed to the Péja Prosecutor with a warning message about the danger he was facing.

I wish the day would not come when you and the responsible institutions would be obliged to render an account only after my life was taken, Zekij wrote in the message to the Prosecutor, according to Haxhi’s response.

The Speaker of the Parliament has stressed that the investigation should not only be limited to the circumstances of the murder, but should also review the treatment of charges, risk assessment and measures taken by responsible institutions.

Every action and possible institutional inaction must be clarified and, where violations are confirmed, the corresponding responsibility is determined, Haxhiu has declared.

It has warned that, within the framework of the Parliament’s supervisory responsibilities, it will seek from relevant parliamentary commissions to review the functioning of mechanisms for protection from domestic violence and childicide prevention.

According to her, special attention should be given to the risk assessment and inter-institute co-ordination so that eventual shortcomings can be identified and treated before other lives are lost.

At the end of the response, Haxhiu has expressed condolences to the son of Arlinda Zekina and her family.
