Turkey’s president, Recep Tayip Erdogan, has warned that attacks on civilian ships on the Black Sea risk increasing tensions in the region, stressing that such escalation is not in the interest of either side.
He made those statements Saturday in Istanbul during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is holding a working visit to Turkey.

Security in the Black Sea and ensuring safe navigation were among the main issues of discussion between the two leaders. They reviewed efforts to improve the situation and protect shipping in this strategic area.
Erdogan reaffirmed Turkey’s readiness to support diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
We are willing to make every possible effort to pave the way to peace in Ukraine, he said.
The Turkish president also spoke of rebuilding Ukraine after the war. According to him, Turkish companies that have continued working in this country, despite the war launched in 2022, will play an important role in the reconstruction process.
The meeting also focused on the importance of maintaining the free movement of civilian ships and strengthening maritime security on the Black Sea.
